Father's Day: Caring for Dad's Health

As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, it’s the perfect time to check in on dad’s health. As we age, our bodily functions begin to decline, increasing the risk of various health issues. However, with early detection and preventive measures, many of these health problems can be avoided or managed effectively.
Here are some common health concerns for older men:
  • Cancer: Cancer has been the leading cause of death in Hong Kong for many years. The incidence of cancer in men is on the rise, with lung, colorectal, and prostate cancers being the most common.
  • Coronary Heart Disease: This is one of the major health threats for men. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and unhealthy lifestyle choices are significant contributors to coronary heart disease.
  • Stroke: Stroke is another major health threat for men, often linked to high blood pressure, poor diet, and lack of exercise.
  • Diabetes: Diabetes is a chronic disease that not only affects blood sugar levels but can also lead to complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

So, how can we help prevent these health problems? Here are some tips:
  • Balanced Diet: Encourage dad to maintain healthy eating habits by including plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats, and fish in his diet. It’s important to limit the intake of oils, sugars, salts, and seasonings, and to stay well-hydrated. A balanced diet helps control cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease and hypertension.
  • Exercise Regularly: Regular physical activity is key to managing weight, lowering blood pressure, and reducing cholesterol levels, which in turn lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking or hiking. If dad has any existing health conditions, consult his doctor before starting a new exercise regimen.
  • Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol: Smoking is a major risk factor for various cancers and cardiovascular diseases, while excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of numerous health issues. For better health, it’s best to avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake.
  • Regular Health Check-ups: Routine physical exams can detect potential health problems early, particularly those that may not show symptoms initially. An annual comprehensive health check-up is recommended, with a focus on heart health, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cancer screenings.
  • Remember to share these health tips with dad and consider using Blua Health's "AI Fit PT" feature to do simple exercises together at home.
